Adult learners at UEA
Mature students are defined by the Office for Students as those aged over 21 when they begin their undergraduate level studies. We have a growing population of mature students at UEA, which make up a fifth of our undergraduate student body (based on the students registered with us for study).
Student life for our mature students varies on a variety of factors, including how inclined individuals are to get involved. Essentially, we promote all aspects of student life to mature students as everyone is welcome to get involved in activities and opportunities open to students more holistically. Many mature students study alongside other responsibilities including work or caring responsibilities. The following video from one of our current health science students provides fantastic insight into time management whilst studying.
For those who love to socialise and try new things, we host ‘give it a go’ sessions through our Students’ Union, UEASU as well as offering a wide range of sports clubs and societies. As a student at UEA, you’re automatically enrolled as a union member, so please feel free to explore. You can find out more about the range of things UEASU offer through their website.
If you’d like to speak to and engage with other mature students outside of your course, there is a free peer support group you can join, alongside a Facebook group. Furthermore, we offer dedicated welcome events as well as opportunities to engage throughout the year, organised by students as well as staff. Students can sign up to receive a monthly newsletter and drop in to speak to the dedicated Mature Student Adviser within our central student hub on campus.
Some of our mature students live on campus within halls of residences. If you’re considering living on campus, you can request to live with other mature students when submitting your preference to our Accommodation team or contact the team directly. To view the range of accommodation available, or contact the Accommodation team, please visit this page.
If you would like to find out more about mature student life, please feel free to sign up to attend a webinar, where you can hear from current mature students and the Mature Student Adviser directly. To view dates and book, please visit this page.
