What's it all about?

Day-to-day tasks

In this role you'll help the factory produce goods on time, on budget and to agreed quality standards. You could:

  • work with production managers and other workers to identify processes
  • draw up plans and proposals for ways to increase productivity and reduce costs
  • use computer aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to build 3D models of manufacturing plants, equipment or assembly lines
  • estimate equipment, time and labour costs
  • test systems and analyse data to work out the best production methods
  • present plans to managers and clients for their approval
  • install new equipment and machinery
  • investigate and fix production problems
  • draw up manuals and training guides

Working environment

You could work in a factory, in an office or in a laboratory.

University

You could do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in subjects like:

  • manufacturing systems engineering
  • electrical or electronic engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • production or manufacturing engineering

If you've got another engineering qualification, you could take a postgraduate course like a master's degree in manufacturing systems engineering.

Entry requirements

You'll usually need:

  • 1 or 2 A levels, or equivalent, for a foundation degree or higher national diploma
  • 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree
  • a degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study
