Applying

Part-time courses

Applications for most part-time higher education courses are made directly to the university or college where you wish to study.

How to apply

You normally apply for part-time and distance-learning courses by completing an online form through the institution’s website. If in any doubt, or if you have questions or concerns, contact the institution’s admissions office.

Part-time courses can commence at various dates and times throughout the academic year, so it’s important to find out the deadline for application.

What will the application form ask?

Forms vary but you will be asked to:

  • list your qualifications and any courses you’re currently taking
  • outline your experience; you may be able to use your work and life experience to help you meet the entry criteria for the course
  • give the details of an appropriate referee
  • complete a statement outlining your reasons for wanting to do the course, why you feel you’re suitable, your aspirations for the future and any other information that’s relevant

This statement is a really important part of the application because this is where you can ‘market yourself’. Apart from mentioning your academic abilities, don’t forget to describe any interests or activities you do that are relevant to the course you want to study. The Lifepilot Higher Skills Map tool will help you think about your experiences, skills, abilities and achievements.
