Embedding Lifepilot in practice - examples

Bath Spa University

Part of my outreach role is to advise mature and Access to Higher Education Diploma students about higher education.  I consider the Lifepilot website to be an invaluable resource for these learners, particularly for those who are taking their very first steps towards entering higher education.  When people at this stage contact me or attend campus Open Days, I always recommend the Lifepilot site as an excellent place to start.  I also recommend the site during Access to Higher Education Diploma outreach visits – to both students and tutors.  In fact it has its own permanent page in my PowerPoint presentations!

The site is easy to navigate and engaging to use.  The tools are effective, the wide range of information that can be accessed through the site is extremely useful and the personal stories are really inspiring.  I also think that its regional focus is of particular use to these groups of learners.

I find Lifepilot an invaluable resource for people at all stages of the exploration process but it is particularly valuable for those who are literally just starting out and don’t have a clue where to start!  There are so many things to think about and it’s impossible to solve everything in one hit, so the opportunity for individuals to save their profile and come back to it means that details don’t get forgotten.  It also has the added benefit of being able to revisit and reflect on some decisions and of course allow the learner to see how far they have come!  I now use it for all of my talks to Access students and at university Open Days as it offers a user-friendly way for students to plan.
